Update from Brian

December 15, 2023

The 58th winter is off to a pretty good start this season—I can’t remember Opening Day ever being a POW Day. I want to share some updates about North Peak, Undercut, and more about the season thus far.

Snow

Well, we are off to a pretty good start this season – I can't remember Opening Day ever being a POW day. We've been receiving smaller storms that have made for consistently good snow conditions on the mountain. It's an El Niño year… which means bigger storms may be on the way – hopefully.

Some big storms would be nice, but in the meantime, the Mountain Operations team is ready to make it happen. Snowmaking got off to a strong start – at peak over 300 snow guns were firing. Last week, the team dealt with an electrical transformer failure that slowed progress, but now that is nearly resolved. We are back on pace and have fired up snowmaking on South Peak – including the new terrain. Yesterday, over 150 snow guns were going on South Peak. Timbertown Quad will open before the Christmas holiday week – the date will be announced soon.

Undercut

Also at South Peak, you'll notice that Undercut got a new cut. Obviously, it's not a new trail but the tree clearing of that trail is well underway and will continue as time and weather permit. Transforming that tree skiing area into a trail will greatly increase the number of days it can open and increase access to the new trails. For this season, undercut needs significant natural snow to open it. If El Niño delivers big, you may be skiing it this winter. It's too early to tell right now, though.

North Peak Express

Many guests have asked me why RFID gates were installed at North Peak Express. It's a great question and the answer may surprise you. The reason is to help with investment planning. North Peak is a favorite location for many, and it has been difficult to understand the guest flow in that area without the same accurate data we compile from other areas of the resort. Flight Path: 2030 calls for an upgrade to the North Peak Express Quad, expanded ski terrain, added snowmaking firepower, and lodge upgrades. Installing RFID gates now will allow us to make data-driven decisions about what those upgrades will be and their timeline.

New Identity

There's a new buzz in Governor Adams Lodge, thanks to Identity Coffee Co. This Lakes Region-based company has overhauled a section of the lodge and will be serving specialty beverages and fresh baked goods throughout the winter. Show your pass to get your pass holder discount.

Parking

If you're arriving by car, respect the directions of our parking lot attendants. Their goal is to get you parked as quickly as possible, and they are in constant contact with each other. Please, follow their instructions – and be kind.

Thank you,

Brian Norton
