Loon Delivering 150 Tons of Snow to Boston Overnight

Truckloads of New Hampshire snow turning City Hall Plaza into an urban terrain park.

Loon Mountain Resort is ready to deliver up to 150 tons of snow to downtown Boston for Red Bull Heavy Metal, a freestyle snowboarding event on Saturday, February 21.

Built with over 8 tractor-trailer-lengths of Loon snow, this free event will transform the steps of Boston’s City Hall Plaza into a three-zone urban terrain park and attract professional snowboarders from across the world. While New England’s strong winter has already brought measurable snow to Boston—this additional snow will allow the freestyle features to be bigger and more impressive for competitors and spectators.

These large-scale snow piles are made possible through Loon’s high-powered snowmaking capabilities. Loon is home to the biggest snowmaking facility closest to Boston. In preparation for this event, the Loon team had an aggressive snowmaking plan. "We ran the snow guns (at the bottom of Escape Route trail) twice as long as we typically would to produce the large amount of snow—firing up about two months in advance,” said Loon’s snowmaking manager, Andrew Barrie.

Transportation of the snow begins February 17 when large trucks are loaded with snow at the bottom of Loon’s South Peak—and make the two-hour trip south to Boston. By early Wednesday morning, the snow will be dumped at City Hall Plaza and construction begins—becoming a fully built snowboard venue by Saturday morning.

The Loon team will be on site—assisting with the construction of all three competition zones, bringing mountain-grade quality to the heart of the city.

“The spectator turnout last year was absolutely mind-blowing—we are privileged to be back in Boston for this unique event,” said terrain parks manager, Bryan Harper. “The Loon team is very proud to put in the long days of shoveling and shaping to support Red Bull Heavy Metal here in Boston.” Loon’s terrain parks are regarded among the best in the eastern United States and currently has 5 terrain parks and 1 halfpipe open at the resort.

Red Bull Heavy Metal made its Boston debut in February 2025, marking the first time the event was hosted in the New England city—and the first time Loon supplied the snow. This year marks the second consecutive season Loon has served as the event’s snow provider, supporting both delivery and park construction.
